Fan Expo 2009

Distractions, Gaming, Toronto

Hulk Smash! What an orgy of geek. This year the event seemed to have doubled in size, made evident by the crush between vendors in the main room. Too many sweaty nerds out there need to learn about Axe Deodorant spray. I think it’s time for the organizers to bite the bullet and increase the room size. I wonder if more “serious” attendees would show up if they did (like they do for Seattle – I’d pay to see 25 min of Avatar then dis it on my blog afterwords!) Don’t get me wrong – the Expo is my Xmas. I can only imagine how “inappropriate” my dwelling would look if I were allowed to shop, untethered to reality. How “single” I’d be with display cases of “action figures” littering all my wall spaces if I were to go consumer crazy in there. Not saying geeks are alone and lonely, but you don’t hear of a lot of them in successful marriages, do you? Knock wood.

To be fair, SharkBoy went movie poster mad this time around. We got posters for Rob Zombie’s new cartoon El Superbeasto (not listed in IMDB?) and AstroBoy. And somehow New Moon tainted that pile. Ew. Feh. Regardless of all that, it was fun.

We started out with breakfast with JTree and Sean and wandered over to the convention centre (their first expo, to which JTree joked being “excited and ashamed”). After the shock of the snakey line up to get in, we said adieu to the boys as they were going off to have personal and intimate time with Leonard Nimoy JTree looked nervous.

Tron BikeThe loot was incredible but in some cases, the prices were inflated. I guess the tables aren’t that cheap any more. Many a trinket was (not so) secretly coveted by me and we did our best to try to avoid the independent horror film hard-sellers. Alas, SharkBoy failed and was suckered into a 3 movie deal that rendered us unconscious on the couch 15 minutes into the first movie. Bye bye $20!

The costumes were great this year. So many more I couldn’t identify, making me feel old and out of touch, but intrigued none the less. My whole Flickr set is here.

In The Background

Distractions, Toronto

So some of you might recall my pics from this year’s EX. A lovely day out of wandering and money spending.

I made one of the images my desktop at work. The one with the cool fish sculpture outside the Food Pavilion:

While booting up my computer this morning, I noticed the couple in the background. Whiskey Tango Foxtrot?!

I don’t know if I inadvertently captured a tender moment (see the hand on her shoulder, their common dejected look) or a start of some porno. Just what is she doing with her hand?

The CNE

Art, Distractions, Toronto

4 years between each CNE visit is about enough. Wandering through the “bargain” sellers made me realize that as a whole, mankind produces a lot of unnecessary crap. But I do love the incredibly glizty, odd, copyright-stolen art the midway has to offer:

Cute? Or wrong?

All in (expensive) fun, right?

But this year SharkBoy and I had a great time watching traditional song and dance from the Maori troupe “Te Ngai Tuahuriri”.  It’s the best thing I’ve seen at the CNE in my entire lifetime of visits.

I’ve made a little video of our day. Enjoy!

Aaand We’re Back

Distractions, Toronto

I woke at 6am on Saturday morning with a need to do… my duty. After, I sat in bed iPhoning the news and such when suddenly the fan at the foot of the bed revved up to Impossible Speed then turned itself off. Suddenly the VCR and clock blinked. Then the fan turned itself back on and seconds later, just died.

Along with everything else within earshot.

Blackout.

Moeesha the Plant finally blooms!

Moeesha the Plant finally blooms!

It’s amazing how interesting and boring your apartment becomes when you have no power. Like noticing a plant that finally blooms again after 3 years of no flowers. Also going through the process of remembering over and over again that some things need power: like having your iPhone die, and thinking “I’ll just plug it in…” to remember the computer is off, then thinking “Oh well I’ll just use the wall adapter!” and then slapping your forehead in even more stupid realization.

Thankfully I had my new Chinese Cheap Watch to keep time:

The ultra bright LEDs do something to the video… but it’s just a mass of lights you have to really count and think about when you tell time. A geek’s watch.

To fend off ennui, we decided to go for a walk to the Market and investigate the cause of the blackout.

Later we learned that one two four all the transformers at the foot of Parliament Street and Queen exploded in a PCB-showering ball of death. At Sherbourne and Carlton, the force of the overload knocked down powerlines all across the road.

"Can you read?!"

"Can you read?!"

We stood around looking at the yellow tape and the Hydro workers earning time and a half when we were suddenly witness to the extent of Police Patience at 8am. A guy wearing an iPod rode his bike under the yellow tape towards the downed wires which prompted the police and firemen to yell at him with ahem… strong language. I don’t blame the cops, but the berating he got after he was stopped (“Can you read?” he shouts for all the crowd to hear as he takes him back to his cruiser, waving the yellow tape in his face) was a bit harsh.

We took refuge at the AMC theatre and watched the early showing of The Boys. If you’re a Disney (super)fan then you need to see this documentary of Richard and Bob Sherman, Disney’s favorite songwriters (think Mary Poppins, most of all the songs from the 50s, and more). It was much more interesting than I expected and I admit I did sniffle a couple of times at the heavy sentimentality of their long careers…

Later, we ventured out into the street to see our neighbourhood in the dark. We came across a small South Asian festival parade of sorts, the only beacon of light in our dark neighbourhood. I really liked the music – it nearly converted me:

As we stood at the corner of Parliament and Carlton, one of Cabbagetown’s more colourful character came up to us and engaged us with some jokes:

“What is red and has 7 dents in it? Snow White’s cherry! It’s funny because she was fucked by the seven dwarves!”

This morning, nearly 24 hours after it went off, the entire apartment clicked on at 6am with a cacophony of alarms, beeps and whirrrs. We’re back!

The Nuttalls – Blyth Festival

Art, Celebs and Media, Distractions, Personal Bits

chickenMy brother opens a new play up at the Blyth Festival tomorrow entitled The Nuttals. I wish his legs would break! From TheRecord.com:

The play guaranteed to stir the pot this season is award-winning Canadian playwright Michael Healey’s The Nuttalls.

It’s a coup for Blyth to commission one of the country’s most celebrated playwrights who gave Canadian theatre The Drawer Boy.

“Michael has such an extraordinary brain,” Coates observes. “No two of his plays are alike.

“I was after him for several years to do something for us and he came across with an unexpected, knockout, drag-out comedy.”

Directed by Kate Lynch, the comedy focuses on a mother and her grown son who swim in a deep pool of domestic discord.

Coates expects some degree of pushback from the community because the comedy satirizes the war in Afghanistan.

“I don’t know if everyone is ready to go where Michael takes us.”

PS: I love how the Blyth website is covered in Chickens.

Lenzr – A Win/Win Contest

Distractions, Lenzr, Toronto

lenzrlogosmallThis might excite RodTO a bit…

Lenzr is a new photo site that I am proud to say I’m going to help market for the next while. “What is it, other than a rift on the Flickr name,” you inquire? Glad you asked. From their promotional email:

Lenzr is a local photo contest that awards real prizes to people who upload the most popular photos as graded by the membership. Photographers gain exposure + links and the chance at winning cool prizes. Public gets free entertainment (and coupons in future cycles) and access to archives
full of local photos.

Three summer contests launched earlier in July will end midnight August 31st 2009.

So imagine it’s a “Hot or Not” contest where companies offer prizes for the best photos, ensuring their marketing presence online, while we the public get to look at a ton of cool pics while we’re bored at work. Registration is not necessary to vote, but it’s a great way to know when things are changing on the site.

Currently there are three contests going on:

best_summerSummer in Toronto:
What does Summer in the big city mean to you? With the strike I am sure it means big piles of steaming garbage but let’s go past that… Regardless what is posted, the winner gets their choice of smartphone like the iPhone, Blackberry or Pre (and more).

best_emsEmergency in Toronto:
Don’t waste your pics on useless CTV or CityTV web uploads that offer little in return (ooo my name was mentioned on CP24! BAH!). Post your EMS worker bolting into action and you can win a Esquire Verve men’s watch. Got a great arrest shot from that drunk party that was busted up? Was your car rolled on the 401 and you have a nice picture of the Jaws of Life cutting you out? Post it! Time is money!

best_skylineBest Toronto Skyline:
This is the first official Lenzr contest. Simply put, take an amazing shot of our fair city’s profile, post it, tell your friends to vote and bingo bongo, a brand new Pentax Optio P70 compact camera (that shoots 720HD video too!) is in your hot grubby hands.

Want to get a hint on what might be coming up? Want to comment or contact Lenzr? Visit Lenzr’s blog for insider info and schweet schwag! Wanna talk about it? Toronto Forums has made their own section for Lenzr. Chat it out people!

In each contest there are minor stipulations and provisions which you need to read, but you’re not signing over your first born. I wish to damn hot goo I could enter some of these contests. But I will be voting so leave nice comments, people.

Get out there and get clicking!

Calvacade of Weekend Movies

Distractions, General

marina1Since we’re down 52% less paycheque these days, SharkBoy and I have been staying in, mostly watching unopened videos from purchases past or pay-TV channel gems before Rogers shuts them off for late payments (just kidding… for now…). Here is a list with a one sentence review of the last few movies we’ve watched:

The Black Hole: Ernest Borgnine dies as the story bleeds logic while the set design steals the show.

Norma Rae: Plucky actress Sally Fields broke an extra’s rib in one scene.

Push: William Gibson could have wrote this twisty story, but it was terribly shot.

Paul Blart – Mall Cop: Avoid.

Eyes Wide Shut: Guiltily turned it off 45 minutes into it.

Carousel: Wide wide screen reveals extras standing around doing nothing in this overlooked classic.

Stingray (Episodes 1-5): Marina kills me laughing as I’m constantly reminded of Team America.

Blindness: Not enough disaster porn, but it’s a nice deconstruction story of morality and civility.

Mutual Of Omaha Animal Kingdom (Episodes 1 and 2): This show would not survive 10 minutes if shown today due to all the staged animal cruelty.

Zack and Miri Make a Porno: Why did I wait so long to see this pure Kevin Smith film?

Lets Go Outside

Distractions

I downloaded TimeLapse from the Apps store and made a little movie in iMovie. It was a bit of a chore not having used iMovie before but after a few online searches, I gots it done! In this masterpiece I am at work, dreaming of the weekend. En Joy It!
