Hey Ash! Whatcha Playing? Orson Scott Card is a Dyke

Celebs and Media, Gaming, Queer stuff

I just finished Ender’s Game a week ago and thought, ok… I can see how this would rile up some people. Kids being killers, unrealistic portrayal of child geniuses, ends justify the means, bla bla bla. But I thought the newly revised forward was much more interesting, where Mr Scott Card (Or is it just Card?) rants on for page after page of how much trouble his book stirred up and how many people responded saying he was a literary god. I swear to you it’s 40 pages of ego masturbation that crosses over the borders of embarrassing into megolomanialand. Much like a blog, really.

El Yawn-o.

I know. I shouldn’t pay this homophobe any attention other to mock him with signs that say “I Have a Sign!”, but I got caught up in the hype and thought I should read one from him, if just to figure out what makes him so controversial. I can assure you, after gnawing through that forward alone, I’ll never bother again. No the book wasn’t that shocking – maybe it was in the 70’s, like a meddling John Hughes film, but it doesn’t stand the test of time in a post 9-11, liberty eroded society. What actually made me think this man a dork was his comments about same sex marriage, utter flabbergasting and so tired (open the link, read the first paragraph and die a little inside. That’s all you need.).

Take heart in knowing there are people out there who can make light of the whole “Should an avid gay gamer buy an amazingly developed game that puts money into a homophobe’s pocket?” conundrum. HAWP’s “Ash” has impeccable comic timing. I wish she was my best friend.

Only Fourth? Tsk.

Celebs and Media, Personal Bits

The Globe is reporting that the Wall Street Journal is reporting that my brother’s play “The Drawer Boy” was the fourth most produced play in the US in the last decade. You may touch my sleeve.

Read the Globe article though. It’s very informative as to just who liked his plays and who weren’t kind over the last ten years. Also it has possibly the most creepiest picture of him ever. He is full on “Potato chin”

We’re off to see his new play “Courageous” Friday night. Yes. The freebie plea came through. Truly, he’s a generous brother. Love ya, Michael!

Okay any past comments I’ve ever made about Richard Ouzounian over at the Star are off the table. He’s given my brother’s play, Courageous, 3.5 stars out of 4.

You may recall I was privileged to be able to read a near-final draft of the play last month and I’ll be honest, after my first reading, I didn’t think it was going to be accessible to the general public (my brother nervously confessed he was worried about “this one not being any good” as we left a family dinner). However, I’m in agreement with Richard O when he says that Micheal’s writing “make(s) your head spin long after the curtain has fallen.” I’ve been thinking a lot of the nuances within the play, the writing, and I’m looking forward to seeing it.

If I can get some free tickets.

What’s In The Suitcase? Day Seven

Celebs and Media

This shirt was acquired last summer at the Fan Expo. In the middle of the room is a massive Borg cube festooned with geek/nerd/retro shirts. I could easily spend a whole paycheque there. What folly.

I wish I could (legally) watch the 4th season of Venture Bros. Take heed, Teletoon and G4 TV! Time to pony up some better shows for your “more adult cartoon” time slots you put on after 9pm. I’m getting tired of Futurama (sacrilege I know, but you can only watch it so many times before you want to claw out your eyes) and the Drinky Crow Show is just not doing it for me.
