Scientology is under attack, people!
A group (?) calling itself Anonymous is dropping video onto YouTube with powerful threats (?) against the church (?). They’re calling for world demonstrations outside Scientology centres on February 10th and go on to make veiled threats of the church’s collapse.
Okay, whatever. What makes me makes me squirm with delight is the way they’re delivering their threats. Perhaps they’ve read William Gibson’s Pattern Recognition but there are definite similarities: PR is about masses of people speculating on the appearance of anonymous, yet beautifully shot movie clips showing up on the web. Are they part of a larger movie? If so, how are they to be assembled? Who is sending them? I won’t spoil the book but in the end, all that matters is swept away leaving the players naked and unsatisfied.

I think the whole thing is absolutely hilarious… from what I hear, the whole bunch in California are spinning like whirling dirvishes over this whole thing. Apparently this group Anonymous has managed to knock out $cientology websites around the world, from what I heard on CBC Radio’s Search Engine podcast last week.
I think the best comment belonged to Bill Maher recently, listen to the podcast of Real Time with Bill Maher when he had Richard Belzer as a guest, or his appearance on Larry King Live last evening (Monday night, Feb 4th)… I won’t say it here in case I p.o. any readers. But, I did get a good laugh from it.
long live cyril vosper.
I thought that was Chuck Norris’ role.
Q: Why does Chuck Norris ignore the Periodic Table?
A: Because the only element he cares about is Surprise.
Tom Cruise is gonna come kick your ass.
Agreed. Either these guys are brilliant techno-terrorists or a bunch of film students who are pissing themselves with laughter.
Lovely!
Very well done video. I found the juxtaposition of verbal & musical aura (ominous & threatening) with the protestations of defending freedom and confronting evil, very striking.
I met Prof Stephen Kent of the University of Alberta, an acknowledged academic authority on Scientology, when we were both assisting the Integrated Intelligence Unit (joint Edmonton PD & RCMP) during the Satanic Panic. I thought his reported comments on this “anonymous” were very cogent.
